Best Spring Crops Stardew Valley — Year 1 Profit & Planting Guide

Which crops make the most money in Spring? Compare Strawberries, Cauliflower, and Potatoes with profit-per-day math for Stardew Valley 1.6 Year 1.

Quick Summary

  • Top Cash Crop: Strawberries (Egg Festival on Spring 13, 100g seed) yield 2 harvests in Year 1 for 140g net profit per seed.
  • Early Cash Engine (Days 1–12): Potatoes (50g seed, 6 days) give reliable early income and a 20% bonus crop chance to fund festival seeds.
  • High-Value Single Harvest: Cauliflower (80g seed, 12 days, 175g base sell) is required for the Community Center Spring Crops bundle.
  • Seasonal Timing: Blueberries are a Summer crop — save gold from late Spring harvests to buy Blueberry seeds on Summer 1.

Spring in Stardew Valley is your first chance to build wealth. Many new players plant random seeds or stick strictly to Parsnips, but maximizing your gold per day requires a clear planting schedule. With the right rotation, you can enter Summer with upgraded tools, quality sprinklers, and plenty of gold.

Top Spring Crops Ranked by Profit

Every crop has trade-offs between initial seed cost, grow time, and total yield. In Year 1, cash flow is tight, so fast-turnaround crops are just as important as late-season powerhouses.

1. Strawberries — The Undisputed King of Spring

Strawberry crop in Stardew Valley
Strawberries are the most lucrative crop in Spring.

Strawberry seeds are sold exclusively at the Egg Festival on Spring 13 for 100g each. They take 8 days to mature and regrow every 4 days. If you plant and water them on the night of the festival (Spring 13), you get two full harvests on Spring 21 and Spring 25.

Each normal strawberry sells for 120g, giving 240g total revenue and 140g net profit per plant. If you use Speed-Gro or Deluxe Speed-Gro before planting on the 13th, you can squeeze in a third harvest on Spring 28 for 360g revenue and 260g net profit.

2. Potatoes — Best Fast Turnaround (Days 1–12)

Potato seeds cost 50g at Pierre's General Store and take 6 days to mature. A normal potato sells for 80g, providing a guaranteed minimum profit of 30g (5.00g/day). Crucially, every harvested potato plant has an approximate 20% chance to yield an extra potato.

Factoring in the bonus drop, potatoes average around 96g in revenue per harvest (~7.67g/day profit). Planting two rounds of potatoes between Day 1 and Day 12 is the most reliable strategy to multiply your initial funds into 3,000g–5,000g before the Egg Festival.

3. Cauliflower — High-Value Bundle Essential

Cauliflower crop in Stardew Valley
Cauliflower offers strong single-harvest returns and giant crop potential.

Cauliflower seeds cost 80g and take 12 days to mature, selling for 175g at base quality (95g net profit, 7.92g/day). Note that planting on Spring 1 means harvesting on Spring 13: because Pierre's General Store is closed on festival days and his Egg Festival booth does not purchase crops, Day-13 Cauliflower cannot fund same-day Strawberry seeds. Instead, reserve one Cauliflower for the Community Center Spring Crops Bundle and ship the rest for post-festival funds (credited on Spring 14) to finance tool upgrades.

Cauliflower is also required for the Spring Crops Bundle in the Community Center. Furthermore, planting them in a 3x3 grid gives a 1% daily chance to form a Giant Cauliflower, which yields 15–21 items when harvested with an axe.

Year 1 Spring Planting Schedule

Timing is critical because crops planted too late will wither and die when Summer begins on the 28th. Here is the optimal schedule for your first season.

Phase 1 (Days 1–12): Cash Accumulation

On Day 1, plant your 15 free Parsnip seeds alongside as many Potatoes as your starting 500g allows. Harvest Parsnips on Day 5 and reinvest immediately into a second cycle of Potatoes.

Ensure your final pre-festival potato batch is planted no later than Spring 6 so it matures by Spring 12. Because Pierre's General Store is closed on the Spring 13 Egg Festival and his booth will not buy crops, all pre-festival harvests must be sold directly to Pierre by Spring 12 (or placed in the shipping bin by the end of Day 12 to be credited on the morning of Day 13). Planting potatoes on Spring 7 matures on Day 13, which is too late to convert into festival cash.

Phase 2 (Days 13–28): Strawberry Snowball

Buy as many Strawberry seeds as you can afford at the Egg Festival. Plant and water them immediately when you return home at 10:00 PM on Spring 13.

Harvest your first wave of strawberries on Day 21 and the second wave on Day 25. Use the profits to upgrade your Watering Can and Axe to Copper, craft Quality Sprinklers, and stock funds for Summer seed shopping.

Common Spring Mistakes to Avoid

Avoid these frequent traps that slow down early farm progression:

The Tulip Trap

Tulip seeds cost 20g and take 6 days to grow, selling for only 30g at base quality (10g net profit, 1.67g/day). Despite common myths, Tulips do not grow in 3 days and do not sell for 75g. They are meant for gifting to Evelyn or crafting, not commercial profit.

Saving for Summer Blueberries

Blueberry seeds are a Summer crop, costing 80g at Pierre's. They take 13 days to grow and produce 3 berries every 4 days. Do not expect to plant them in Spring; instead, preserve your Day 25 Strawberry earnings so you can plant 40–60 Blueberries on Summer 1.
