Green Rain Event Guide: What to Do & Why It's Worth It

Wondering what the green rain event does in Stardew Valley 1.6? Grab what you can before it vanishes, chop the right trees, and stock a year of moss.

The green rain event is one of the weirdest weather days in Stardew Valley 1.6. Instead of normal rain, the sky turns green and the entire valley gets carpeted in thick moss, oversized weeds, and mutated trees. It only happens during summer, and if you treat it like a regular rainy day and head straight to the mines, you're making a mistake.

Quick Summary

  • Triggers randomly on a summer day when rain is forecast — the TV weather report the day before will announce "some kind of anomalous reading" instead of the normal forecast.
  • Every outdoor area gets covered in Moss, Fiber, and special Green Rain Trees that drop moss, fiber, mixed seeds, and mossy seeds.
  • The event occurs once every Summer (not just once per save file) and clears overnight — whatever you don't harvest by 2 AM disappears until the following summer.
  • Most villagers either stay inside or gather in the Saloon — Demetrius wears a hazmat suit and stays outside near his lab studying it.

1. What Actually Happens During Green Rain

When you wake up on a green rain day, the entire outdoor map shifts. Every zone — your farm, Cindersap Forest, the Mountain, the Backwoods, the Railroad, and the Bus Stop — spawns a ridiculous amount of harvestable nodes. We're talking 200-300+ fiber across the map, plus moss on nearly every tree trunk. The weeds grow so thick in some spots you literally have to scythe a path through them.

These aren't normal weeds either. The special green rain weeds drop Moss, which is a valuable crafting ingredient introduced in 1.6. Moss is used for crafting Speed-Gro (1 Pine Tar + 5 Moss yields 5 Speed-Gro), the Mushroom Log (10 Hardwood + 10 Moss), Deluxe Bait (5 Bait + 2 Moss), the Statue of Blessings, the Deluxe Worm Bin, and Treasure Totems. One solid day of scything during green rain can net you 200–300 moss — stocking your crafting reserves for multiple seasons.

2. Where to Go First — Priority Route

Time is tight. You have from 6 AM to 2 AM to clear as much as possible. Here's the route I run every single green rain, and it's never let me down.

Start on your own farm. Clear every weed and green fiber node you can reach. Check your tree trunks for moss — especially oak and maple trees near the edges. Don't bother tilling soil or watering crops today; the rain handles your watering.

Next, hit Cindersap Forest. The area around the sewer entrance and Marnie's Ranch gets absolutely loaded. Bring your scythe and go to town. After that, head to the Railroad and Mountain areas — the spawns there are dense and nobody talks about them. The Bus Stop is also worth a sweep, but it's smaller and less dense.

Ignore the Beach and the Desert — green rain doesn't affect those areas. Don't waste time there.

3. What About the Green Rain Trees?

During the event, you'll see several tree types that don't exist normally. The most common is called a Green Rain Tree — it drops moss, wood, and Mossy Seeds when shaken or chopped. Mossy Seeds are the real prize here. Plant them and you get a tree that continuously produces moss over time, which solves your moss shortage permanently.

The second type is the Fiddlehead Fern Tree, which drops fiddleheads. These are decent for a quick cash injection but not something I'd prioritize over moss and seeds. Chop a few if you need the gold, but don't burn your whole day on them.

If you have the axe stamina to spare, chop down every Green Rain Tree you see. The mossy seeds alone are worth more long-term than the wood. Moss farming turns into a surprisingly solid passive income source once you have a few trees producing it.

4. How to Prepare for Green Rain

You can't predict green rain more than one day ahead. The TV will say something like "there seems to be some kind of green reading coming" instead of the usual weather icon. That's your signal.

Here's what to have ready:

  • Iridium Scythe (or at least gold) — the harvest speed difference is huge when you're clearing 300+ nodes.
  • Food buffs — you'll burn through energy fast. Bring cheese, salad, or any high-energy stack.
  • Empty backpack slots — you'll fill up on fiber and moss, especially if you're grabbing ferns too.

Skip the animals, skip the mines, skip everything else. This is a one-shot resource windfall. Treat it like a festival day where the festival is free materials.

I've played through four green rain events across different saves, and the one time I half-hearted it because I wanted to progress the mines, I regretted it for two full seasons — don't sleep on this day, it's the most productive 16 hours you'll get all summer.
