Stardew Valley Fruit Trees Guide — Best Profit, Placement & Growing Tips (1.6)
Which fruit trees are worth planting in Stardew Valley? Price table, growth time, optimal placement, Greenhouse setups, and banana vs mango island picks.
Fruit trees aren't like regular crops. You buy a sapling, wait 28 days for it to mature, then get one fruit per day during its season. Sounds slow — but once they're grown, they're basically zero-maintenance income. Pick fruit daily, toss into a Keg, and enjoy passive gold.
Quick Summary
- 28-day growth period. Buy saplings at Pierre's or Travelling Cart.
- 1 fruit per day during the tree's season (Greenhouse = year-round).
- Fruit quality improves each year. Year 1 = basic, Year 2 = silver, Year 3+ = gold.
- Greenhouse and Ginger Island let them produce 365 days. This is the real endgame setup.
- Best fruits for Keg: Pomegranate, Peach, Apple.
All Fruit Trees
The game has 8 fruit trees in total (banana and mango are Ginger Island exclusives unless you plant them in the Greenhouse):
| Tree | Sapling Cost | Season | Base Fruit Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple | 4,000g | Fall | 100g |
| Apricot | 2,000g | Spring | 50g |
| Cherry | 3,400g | Spring | 80g |
| Orange | 4,000g | Summer | 100g |
| Peach | 6,000g | Summer | 140g |
| Pomegranate | 6,000g | Fall | 140g |
| Banana | 6,000g | All (Island) | 150g |
| Mango | 5,000g | All (Island) | 130g |
Peach and Pomegranate saplings cost the most, but their fruit is also worth the most. Apple and Pomegranate are also required for Community Center bundles, so you'll need them anyway.
Fruit Quality Scales With Age
Unlike regular crops, fruit trees don't need fertilizer. Their fruit quality just goes up every year:
| Year | Quality | Price Multiplier |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Basic | x1 |
| 2 | Silver | x1.25 |
| 3+ | Gold | x1.5 |
Gold-quality fruit in a Keg yields more expensive wine too. Don't sell fresh fruit once you have a Keg setup — the wine is always worth more.
Placement Tips
1. Greenhouse — The Holy Grail
Greenhouse is the best place for fruit trees. Plant them along the tillable edges (the wooden border around the soil grid). Each tree needs 2 tiles of space between them (one empty tile in between). Inside the Greenhouse, trees bear fruit year-round no matter what season it is outside.
2. Spacing matters (while growing)
Fruit trees need a 3x3 clear area around their trunk while growing. That means one empty tile on every side. Once mature, you can put paths, fences, or machines around them without hurting production — but during growth, anything in that 3x3 zone stunts them.
3. No watering needed
Here's the best part: fruit trees don't need watering. Plant them and forget them for 28 days. Compared to seasonal crops, they're the most hands-off investment in the game.
4. Don't overplant outdoors
Planting outdoors? Stick to 1-3 trees per type. Each tree gives 1 fruit per day, that's ~28 fruits per season. You don't need 10 Apple trees —- variety is better for Community Center bundles and NPC gifts.
I once planted 8 Apple trees in Year 1. By late Fall I had over 200 apples and no idea what to do with them. Plant diverse — 1 Apple, 1 Pomegranate, 1 Peach — covers bundles and gives you great wine variety year-round.
Profit Ranking (Gold Wine in Keg)
Here's what each tree earns per day at Year 3 quality, converted into Keg wine:
| Tree | Wine Price (Gold) | Daily Profit |
|---|---|---|
| Pomegranate | 840g | 294g |
| Peach | 840g | 294g |
| Banana | 875g | 262g |
| Apple | 600g | 210g |
| Mango | 780g | 130g |
| Orange | 600g | 140g |
| Cherry | 480g | 140g |
| Apricot | 300g | 70g |
Pomegranate and Peach are the kings — high base price translates into great wine returns. Banana is technically top-tier but only grows on Island/Greenhouse, making logistics annoying. If you just unlocked the Greenhouse, go Pomegranate and Peach first.
Ginger Island Setup
Beyond the Island-exclusive Banana and Mango, you can also plant mainland trees on Ginger Island. The island has no seasons, so trees produce year-round — same as the Greenhouse. If your Greenhouse is already packed, the Island is a solid second location for scaling up production.

Fruit trees are the best long-term investment in Stardew Valley, period. Once you have a Greenhouse running with 3-4 Pomegranate, Peach, and Banana trees, you've got a passive wine factory — zero effort beyond harvesting and refilling Kegs.
