Ginger Island Guide — How to Unlock, Boat Materials & What to Do First (1.6)

Fix Willy's boat with 200 Hardwood + 5 Iridium Bars + 5 Battery Packs. Full Ginger Island unlock guide: Golden Walnuts, Volcano Forge, and Island Farm.

Finished the Community Center (or Joja Warehouse) and wondering what's next? Willy has a letter waiting for you. Behind the back door of his fish shop lies a broken-down boat — and your ticket to the best late-game content in Stardew Valley.

Quick Summary

  • Prerequisite: Complete the Community Center or Joja Warehouse.
  • Boat Materials: 200 Hardwood, 5 Iridium Bars, 5 Battery Packs.
  • First Priority: Hunt for Golden Walnuts to unlock Island areas.

Step 1: Willy's Invitation

A day or two after your big completion ceremony, check your mail. Willy will ask you to visit the Fish Shop at the beach. That locked door behind his counter? It's open now.

Willy's Fish Shop
The back room contains an old boat that needs some serious work.

Step 2: Fixing the Boat

Willy provides the labor, but you provide the materials. This is why you should always hoard resources. You'll need:

Material Amount How to Farm It
Hardwood 200 Secret Woods stumps or planting Mahogany trees.
Iridium Bar 5 Skull Cavern runs or the Statue of Perfection.
Battery Pack 5 Lightning Rods during storms or Solar Panels.

Once you turn these in, Willy spends the night repairing the vessel. From then on, you can buy a ticket to the island for 1,000g per trip.

Step 3: What to Do First on Ginger Island

Ginger Island is huge and confusing at first. Don't wander aimlessly—focus on these goals:

1. Hunt Golden Walnuts

Walnuts are the "currency" of the island. You "pay" them to Parrots to unlock bridges, buildings, and fast-travel. There are 130 total, but you only need a few to get the ball rolling.

2. Conquer the Volcano Dungeon

Volcano Dungeon on Ginger Island
The Forge at the top of the Volcano is where you craft god-tier gear.

Located at the north of the island, this 10-floor dungeon is where you find the Forge. This is where you enchant weapons and combine rings. It's the biggest power spike for your character.

3. Unlock the Island Farm

To the west is a massive farm plot. Once you bribe the turtle to move, you gain access to a field where crops grow regardless of the season. It's like a second Greenhouse, but way bigger.

Pro Tips for New Explorers

  1. Bring your Watering Can: You need it to cool down lava inside the Volcano Dungeon to create paths.
  2. Meet Leo: He's the only NPC living on the island. Give him Duck Feathers to boost his friendship fast.
  3. Craft Warp Totems: "Warp Totem: Island" saves you the 1,000g fee and the trip to the beach.

Ginger Island is the best place to spend your Winter. The Island Farm will keep your profits high while the mainland is frozen.

Ginger Island changes everything. Between the Forge and the year-round farm, it’s basically Stardew Valley 2.0. Unlock it ASAP.
