Stardew Valley Mastery System: Levels & Rewards (1.6)
How the Stardew Valley Mastery system works: when it unlocks, how to level each skill, Mastery Glow rewards, and all 5 tiers explained. 1.6 guide.
If you're new, Mastery is practically invisible — until you see that weird glowing icon at the bottom of your screen. That's the Mastery Glow, and it's not just for show. This system rewards your grind properly.
Quick summary
- Unlocks when: Any skill hits level 10.
- 5 Mastery skills: Farming, Foraging, Fishing, Mining, Combat.
- Rewards: Mastery Glow (colored aura per skill) + new Professions.
- No downside: Picking Mastery doesn't remove old professions, but you can't undo it.
- Pro tip: Grinding all 5 skills gets you there faster than you'd think.
What is the Mastery System?
Mastery is the follow-up to the traditional skill system. When you push any skill to level 10, instead of just getting a Profession like before, you unlock the Mastery Level for that skill. Each of the 5 skills has 5 Mastery tiers, from tier 1 to tier 5.
In short: skill 10 used to be the finish line. Now it's the starting line of a whole new system.
When does Mastery unlock?
The moment you hit level 10 in any skill. You'll see a "Mastery unlocked" notification and the skill icon will start glowing. From that point on, any XP earned in that skill goes toward Mastery XP instead of regular skill XP.
Nothing extra to do. It runs in the background. Just play normally.
All 5 Mastery skills and rewards
1. Farming Mastery
Farming Mastery gives you bonus gold from harvesting crops. Higher tiers mean more gold. It also unlocks professions like Agriculturist (faster growth) and Artisan (higher sell prices) at different tiers.
If you're running a serious farm, this is the most worth investing in early. Check the crop calculator for the most profitable crops.
2. Foraging Mastery
Foraging Mastery increases your chance of Double Item when gathering and lets you collect more materials from nature. Related professions: Gatherer (double forage) and Botanist (higher quality).
3. Fishing Mastery
Fishing Mastery reduces catch time, increases fish spawn rates, and unlocks Master Baiter (premium bait) at higher tiers. If fishing is your chill money-maker, this is the easiest skill to level.
Fishing 30-40 minutes a day will bump up Fishing Mastery surprisingly fast. Pair it with the Daily Planner for seasonal fish tracking.
4. Mining Mastery
Mining Mastery increases rare ore drop rates, reduces stamina cost, and unlocks Miner (extra ore) / Geologist (ore clusters). Essential if you run Skull Cavern or Volcano Dungeon regularly.
Also check our Iridium guide for optimized mine runs.
5. Combat Mastery
Combat Mastery boosts damage, reduces damage taken, and unlocks Fighter (+damage) / Brute (+HP). This one grinds slower since outside of mines, enemies are limited.
Best method: deep Skull Cavern runs or farming the Volcano. A Slingshot makes quick work of groups.
Mastery XP per tier
XP required to level up each Mastery skill:
| Mastery Tier | XP Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 → 2 | ~15,000 | Easy, 1-2 weeks of casual play |
| Tier 2 → 3 | ~30,000 | Moderate |
| Tier 3 → 4 | ~50,000 | Starting to take a while |
| Tier 4 → 5 | ~80,000 | For the dedicated |
These are approximate — actual time depends on your play intensity. Playing 12 hours a day, you'd hit tier 3-4 in about a month.
Mastery Glow — the flex reward
At certain Mastery tiers, your skill icons on the HUD start glowing with a unique color. This is the Mastery Glow. Each skill has its own color:
- Farming: Gold — harvest vibes.
- Foraging: Green — nature.
- Fishing: Blue — water.
- Mining: Brown/Red — stone.
- Combat: Red — blood.
Higher tier = brighter glow. In multiplayer, everyone sees it. A subtle flex.
Which Profession to pick with Mastery?
When your skill hits level 10, you still pick a Profession like normal. But at Mastery tier 5, you unlock the Mastery Profession — an upgraded version of that profession.
Important: Picking Mastery doesn't remove your old profession. But if you want to respec, you need the Statue of Uncertainty at the Wizard's Tower. Mastery itself can't be undone — so choose wisely.
Tips to grind Mastery fast
- Farming: Plant dense crops, harvest daily. Summer Blueberry or Starfruit gives massive XP.
- Foraging: Clear the forest daily, plant Wild Seeds, hit Secret Woods.
- Fishing: Fish every day, use Trap Bobber or Cork Bobber for efficiency.
- Mining: Regular mine runs, prioritize Skull Cavern for high enemy/ore density.
- Combat: Farm enemies on mine floors 1-120 or Volcano. A Slingshot speeds things up.
Mastery isn't a sprint. It rewards consistency. Just play normally and it'll level itself. Don't stress about the XP bar.

Personally, Farming Mastery is my favorite because the payoff is immediate — extra gold on every harvest. Combat Mastery doesn't really shine until you're doing deep Volcano runs.
