Stardew Valley Skills Guide — Level All 5 Fast (1.6)

Level all 5 skills fast in Stardew Valley 1.6. Master farming, mining, foraging, fishing & combat with the best perks and professions in this skills guide.

Did you know there are exactly 5 skills in Stardew Valley — and each one unlocks a two-choice perk at level 10 that many new players miss or pick wrong? This guide covers how to level every skill from 1 to 10, which perks to take for your playstyle, and small tricks that can save you dozens of in-game days.

Quick summary

  • 5 skills: Farming, Mining, Foraging, Fishing, Combat — each levels through its related action
  • Level 5 and 10: Each milestone gives 2 perks, you pick 1 — pick wrong and it affects your entire run
  • Fastest path: Prioritize Foraging and Fishing early — easy levels + best gold in year 1

Skill system overview

Every skill in Stardew Valley goes from level 0 to 10, and you level up by doing the relevant action: harvesting crops for Farming, breaking rocks for Mining, picking wild items for Foraging, catching fish for Fishing, and killing monsters for Combat. Each level-up gives you a skill point to spend on perks via the skills tab.

Important: perks chosen at level 5 and level 10 are permanent — you can't respec without mods. Read carefully before committing, or at least know your intended playstyle in advance.

Farming skill

How to level Farming fast

Farming levels based on the number of crops you harvest — not the number of seeds you plant. Each crop gives a fixed amount of XP at harvest, so plant high-frequency crops to level faster: Parsnip (spring), Blueberry (summer), Cranberry (fall) are top picks because they regrow and can be harvested multiple times.

In winter you can't farm outdoors, but you can still earn Farming XP by using Quality Sprinklers + Wild Seeds (Winter) in the Greenhouse or Garden Pots indoors.

Level 5 perk — which to choose?

  • Rancher: Animal products sell for 20% more. Good if you focus on cows, sheep, and chickens.
  • Artisan: Artisan goods (wine, cheese, oil, jam…) sell for 40% more. This is the strongest perk in the game — Ancient Fruit wine + Artisan = unlimited gold.

Farming Level 10 perks

  • Agriculturist: Crops grow 10% faster. Saves time, especially for long-term Ancient Fruit farms.
  • Profession: Adds "Farmer" to your title — cosmetic only. Pick Agriculturist if you haven't already.

Recommendation: Artisan → Agriculturist is optimal for 99% of playstyles. Rancher only makes sense if you focus on animals and skip artisan goods entirely.

Mining skill

How to level Mining fast

Mining levels from breaking rocks and ore nodes. Regular stone gives XP too, so the fastest method is to clear floors hitting every rock until you find ore, then keep going. Skull Cavern is the best Mining leveling spot — Iridium Ore gives massive XP.

Pro tip: Use Bombs and Mega Bombs in the mine to clear large groups of rocks at once. Killing monsters gives minor XP, but rock-breaking is the main source.

Mining Level 5 perks

  • Miner: +1 ore from every ore node. Extremely strong — applies to Copper, Iron, Gold, and Iridium.
  • Excavator: +1 coal from every coal node. Useful but less impactful than Miner.

Mining Level 10 perks

  • Blacksmith: Metal bars sell for 50% more. Good if you sell bars regularly.
  • Gemologist: Gems sell for 30% more. Only good if you farm gems heavily.

Recommendation: Miner → Blacksmith. +1 ore per node at level 5 is the strongest level 5 perk. Blacksmith or Gemologist depends on what you sell more.

Foraging skill

How to level Foraging fast

Foraging levels when you pick wild items (flowers, mushrooms, berries, salmonberries…) and when you place them in the sprinkler. Salmonberry and Blackberry season is the golden window — each bush produces multiple berries, each berry = XP. Also, using Tree Fertilizer on trees grows more forest trees, and picking their fruit counts as XP.

Pro tip: Plant Mahogany Trees from Mahogany Seeds — each tree gives huge XP when chopped. If you have Ginger Island, this is the fastest Foraging farm in the game.

Foraging Level 5 perks

  • Gatherer: Double drop for all foraged items. Incredibly strong — Salmonberry x2, Blackberry x2, and mushrooms from Secret Woods.
  • Forester: More wood from trees. Less impactful than Gatherer.

Foraging Level 10 perks

  • Botanist: All foraged items are automatically iridium quality. Excellent for selling flowers and mushrooms.
  • Tracker: Shows arrows pointing to foraged items on the map. Convenient but no profit impact.

Recommendation: Gatherer → Botanist. Double drop + iridium quality = maximum profit. Tracker is pure quality-of-life.

Fishing skill

How to level Fishing fast

Fishing levels from the number of fish you catch — not the number of times you cast. Harder fish (legendary fish, octopus…) give more XP. The biggest tip: place Crab Pots every day — each harvest counts as Fishing XP.

Year 1, the fastest method is fishing at Mountain Lake or River during rain (trash items are easy to catch). In summer, fish the Ocean for Red Snapper and Tuna — great profit. Legendary Fish give massive XP but can only be caught once each.

Fishing Level 5 perks

  • Fisher: All fish sell for 25% more. Strong because it applies to every fish type.
  • Trapper: Reduces Crab Pot crafting cost from 4 Bars to 2 Bars. Saves some resources but less impactful than Fisher.

Fishing Level 10 perks

  • Angler: All fish sell for 50% more. Stacks with Fisher = +75% fish prices.
  • Pirate: Increases double catch chance while fishing. Fun but less consistent than Angler.

Recommendation: Fisher → Angler. +75% fish prices is the strongest fishing combo. Only pick Pirate if you prefer the surprise factor.

Combat skill

How to level Combat fast

Combat levels from killing monsters. Slimes and Bats are the easiest kills — farm them on Floors 1-40 of the mine. For faster results, Secret Woods spawns monsters and can be reset by entering and exiting repeatedly. Wilderness Farm mode also spawns more monsters than normal.

Pro tip: Use a weapon with knockback (like the Morning Star) to kill monsters safely. Upgrading your weapon at the Blacksmith helps you kill faster → kill more → level faster.

Combat Level 5 perks

  • Fighter: +15% damage. Simple and effective — applies to all weapons.
  • Scout: Increased critical hit chance. RNG-dependent, less consistent than Fighter.

Combat Level 10 perks

  • Brute: Another +15% damage plus stronger knockback. Stacks with Fighter for +30% total damage.
  • Defender: +25 defense. Useful if you die frequently in Skull Cavern.

Recommendation: Fighter → Brute for a damage build. If you die a lot in the mines, Fighter → Defender is fine. Scout has too much RNG to recommend.

Skill leveling priority

If you can only focus on a few skills early game, here's the order by ROI (return on investment):

Priority Skill Reason
1 Foraging Easiest to level, Salmonberry season earns great gold, Gatherer perk is powerful
2 Fishing Best year 1 gold source, Crab Pot gives passive XP, Fisher + Angler = massive profit
3 Farming Artisan perk is the game's meta, need level 10 early to unlock Ancient Fruit wine
4 Mining Needed for tool upgrades, Iridium for sprinklers — levels naturally while exploring mines
5 Combat Levels naturally while killing mine monsters, rarely needs dedicated focus

The above order is for casual/money-focused play. If you're combat-heavy or speedrunning Skull Cavern, push Mining and Combat higher.

Tips and common mistakes

  1. Picking level 5 perks before knowing your playstyle: Play until level 5 naturally, try both options (Artisan vs Rancher, Miner vs Excavator), then decide.
  2. Ignoring Crab Pots: 10-20 crab pots daily = free Fishing XP + profit from shrimp and crabs. Place them early, harvest every day.
  3. Not eating a Stardrop for max energy: Stardrops permanently increase max energy — eat one early for more energy per day, more actions per day.
  4. Forgetting that crop sprinklers still give Farming XP: Using Quality Sprinklers or Iridium Sprinklers still grants XP when you harvest.
  5. Farming Combat by killing Slimes on Floor 1: Don't go deep if you just want XP — Floors 1-5 have plenty of Slimes, easy kills, fast reset.

Personally I always run Artisan + Gatherer + Fisher + Miner + Fighter — this combo suits 90% of playstyles without heavy min-maxing.

If I were starting over, I'd focus on Foraging and Fishing first — both are easy to level, require almost zero capital, and the year 1 profit is excellent. Then pivot to Farming (Artisan) once you have a Greenhouse and Ancient Fruit.
