Quick Summary

Skull Cavern entrance in the Calico Desert
The entrance to the perilous Skull Cavern in the Calico Desert.
  • Location: Calico Desert (northwest corner)
  • How to unlock: Complete "Skull Key" quest from the Mines (floor 120)
  • Entry cost: Free — but the bus ride to Calico Desert costs 500g (free with a Desert Obelisk)
  • Best strategy: Bring staircases, bombs, and plenty of healing food. Always go on a lucky day.
  • Goal: Hit floor 100+ for the best Iridium hauls and treasure rooms.

Unlocking Skull Cavern: Your Ticket to the Endgame

  1. Clear the Mines to floor 120: Fight your way through the regular Mines in Pelican Town. The Skull Key waits for you on Floor 120.
  2. Grab the Skull Key: Pick it up from the treasure chest on floor 120.
  3. Get to Calico Desert: Take the bus from the Bus Stop. You unlock the bus by finishing the Vault Bundle in the Community Center or buying the repair from Joja.
  4. Enter Skull Cavern: Head to the skull-shaped entrance in the desert's northwest. Entry is free once you have the Skull Key.

Pro Tip: That same Skull Key also opens the Casino, hidden behind a bouncer in the back room of the Oasis.

Your Essential Skull Cavern Loadout: Don't Go Empty-Handed

ItemQuantityWhy It's a Must-Have
Iridium Pickaxe1You need this. Fastest mining for all those Iridium nodes.
Galaxy Sword (or better)1Your primary monster slayer. Don't skimp on this.
Bomb (regular)20-30Clear out rocks and reveal ladders quickly.
Mega Bomb10-15For when you need to clear *a lot* of rocks. Buy these from the Dwarf.
Staircase10-20Skip those nightmare floors. Craft from Stone (99 per staircase).
High-heal food30-50Salad, Cheese, Pink Cake. Do NOT run out of healing.
Savage Ring1+2 speed on kill. Helps you zip around after clearing monsters.
Napalm Ring1Monsters explode on death, clearing rocks for you. Super handy.
Spicy Eel5-10+1 speed, +1 luck. The combat food you want.
Crab Cakes5-10+1 speed, +30 defense. Keep you alive longer.

On a budget? No Galaxy Sword or Mega Bombs? A Steel Pickaxe + regular Bombs + a stack of Salads will still get you to floor 50+. It'll be slower, but totally doable.

Skull Cavern Strategies: How to Go Deep

Strategy 1: The Bomb Run (Best for Iridium Hauls)

This is the go-to method for getting stacks of Iridium:

  1. Go on a lucky day: ALWAYS check the TV's "Fortune Teller" channel. You want "Very Happy" or "Super Happy" luck.
  2. Skip bad floors with Staircases: If a floor looks empty, or has too many monsters, drop a Staircase and move on.
  3. Bomb big rock clusters: Drop a Bomb near 5+ rocks. The explosions will reveal Iridium nodes, ore, and gems.
  4. Mine Iridium nodes: Use your Iridium Pickaxe to quickly snag the Iridium.
  5. Keep pushing deeper: The further down you go, the more Iridium spawns. Floors 50+ have good amounts, and 100+ is Iridium heaven.
  6. Get out before 2 AM: If you pass out, you lose items and money. Set a phone alarm for 1:30 AM and bail.

Strategy 2: Staircase Spam (Fastest to Floor 100)

If your only goal is hitting floor 100 (for the quest or Qi's Challenge):

  1. Craft 100+ Staircases: Each one needs 99 Stone. That's 9,900 Stone total (you can buy it from Robin or mine it).
  2. Place a Staircase and go: As soon as you hit a new floor, drop a Staircase and descend. Repeat.
  3. Ignore everything: Don't mine, don't fight. Just keep dropping floors.
  4. Hit floor 100 in ~5 minutes: This is the quickest way, but it eats up a ton of stone.

Heads Up: The mail quest "Qi's Challenge" (reach floor 100) does not ban Staircases — only the Walnut Room's "Skull Cavern Invasion" quest does. Check which one you're on before you spam stairs.

Strategy 3: The Combat Run (For Fun & Extra Loot)

If you actually enjoy fighting monsters and want some extra drops:

  1. Bring your best weapons: Galaxy Sword, Lava Katana, whatever you've got.
  2. Wear defensive rings: Iron Band + Savage Ring is a good combo for speed and damage reduction.
  3. Fight everything: Monsters can drop Iridium Ore, Prismatic Shards, and other valuable items.
  4. Clear every chest: Treasure rooms often have cool loot like the Golden Repeater, Iridium Sprinkler, or even a Prismatic Shard.

Best Days to Visit Skull Cavern: Luck Matters!

Luck LevelEffectShould You Go?
Very Happy (max luck)More ladders, fewer monsters, better drops.✅ YES — Drop everything and go!
Happy (good luck)Slightly more ladders, decent drops.✅ Yes — Good for farming.
NeutralNormal monster and ladder spawns.⚠️ OK — If you really need to go, but not ideal.
Unhappy (bad luck)Fewer ladders, more monsters, worse drops.❌ Skip — You'll waste resources.

How to check luck: Watch the TV every morning and tune into the "Fortune Teller" channel. A purple swirl means good luck.

Skull Cavern Loot Table: What to Expect

Floor 100+ is the real goal. That's where Iridium nodes start showing up like crazy. Floor 200+? Pure Iridium bliss.

Treasure Rooms: Jackpot!

You'll randomly stumble upon treasure rooms every 10-20 floors. These can contain:

  • Iridium Sprinkler: Best sprinkler in the game.
  • Galaxy Sword: If you haven't gotten yours yet.
  • Golden Repeater: A powerful, rare weapon.
  • Prismatic Shard: Super rare and super valuable.
  • Loads of Iridium Ore: We're talking 20-50 pieces.
  • Rare rings and boots: Top-tier endgame gear.

Don't Miss Them: Treasure rooms show up as a chest icon on your minimap. Always check 'em out!

Common Mistakes to Avoid in Skull Cavern

  • Going on bad luck days: You'll burn resources and time for nothing. Always check the TV first thing.
  • Not bringing enough food: Run out of healing and you'll pass out, losing a ton of items and money.
  • Ignoring Serpents: These flying snakes are lethal. Target them first.
  • Staying too late: Passing out at 2 AM is a huge penalty. Always warp out or leave by 1:30 AM.
  • Not using bombs: Mining manually is way too slow. Bombs clear huge areas and reveal ladders instantly.
  • Skipping floors with Staircases: Some floors have awesome loot. Don't staircase past everything.

Skull Cavern Quests: Rewards for the Brave

  • "Skull Key" quest: Clear Mines floor 120, grab the Skull Key, and Skull Cavern is yours.
  • "Qi's Challenge" quest (mail): Reach Skull Cavern floor 100 in one day. Staircases are allowed here. Reward: 10,000g + Qi Gems. (The no-Staircase rule belongs to the Walnut Room's separate "Skull Cavern Invasion" quest.)
  • "Prismatic Jelly" quest: Find a Prismatic Jelly (a rare drop from any monster in Skull Cavern). Reward: 5,000g.

Skull Cavern might seem scary at first, but once you get the hang of the bomb + staircase strategy, it becomes the quickest way to get rich in Stardew Valley. Go on lucky days, bring bombs and plenty of food, and aim for floor 100+. The Iridium will be yours.
