One of the biggest mistakes new players make in Stardew Valley is selling everything they find. That first Parsnip, that random mineral, that artifact — it all seems worthless at first. But many of these items are worth 10x, 20x, or even 100x more if you process them, donate them, or save them for later. This guide covers every item you should never sell raw.

Whether you're struggling to make money or just want to optimize your farm, knowing what to keep is just as important as knowing what to sell. Here's the complete breakdown.

⚡ Quick Answer (TL;DR): Never sell raw Prismatic Shards, Ancient Seeds, Dinosaur Eggs, Rabbit's Feet, or your first copy of any Museum Artifact. Process raw crops into Wine or Jelly for 2-3x profit, and hoard Wood and Stone for farm upgrades.

Quick Summary

Gold Bar and valuable crafting materials not to sell in Stardew Valley — Gold Bars and raw crafting ores are essential for tool upgrades and machinery.

Artifacts & Minerals: Donate to Museum first, then sell duplicates
Rare Items: Keep Rabbit's Foot, Prismatic Shard, Dinosaur Egg — they're irreplaceable
Crops: Process into Wine/Jelly/Jam for 2-5x profit
Wood & Stone: You'll need thousands for buildings — don't sell early
Fish: Keep at least one of each for Community Center bundles
Forageables: Keep Spring Onions, Wild Horseradish for bundles

Artifacts & Minerals — Donate First

Found your first Artifact or Mineral? Don't sell it. Take it to the Museum and give it to Gunther. He rewards you with rare items, furniture, and eventually the Rusty Key to the Sewers.

Priority Donations

Item	Rarity	Why Keep
Dinosaur Egg	Very Rare	Donate to Museum → get dinosaur egg recipe. OR incubate in Coop for a pet dinosaur!
Rare Disc	Rare	Donates for Rusty Key (Sewers access)
Prehistoric Skull	Rare	Museum donation reward
Prismatic Shard	Legendary	Donates for Galaxy Sword. NEVER sell.
Dwarf Gadget	Rare	Museum donation
Golden Mask	Rare	Museum donation

Rule: Donate the FIRST copy of every artifact/mineral. Sell duplicates only after the Museum has them.

Rare Items — NEVER Sell These

Some items are so rare that selling them is literally throwing away value:

The "Never Sell" List

Item	Why Never Sell	What to Do Instead
Prismatic Shard	Used for Galaxy Sword + enchanting	Take to desert pillars → Galaxy Sword
Rabbit's Foot	Very rare (10% daily chance)	Keep for Friendship, Community Center, or luck buff
Dinosaur Egg	Extremely rare artifact	Incubate in Coop → pet dinosaur, or donate to Museum
Ancient Seed	Used for Ancient Fruit farming	Plant it! → Ancient Fruit = money machine
Strange Doll	Rare artifact	Donate to Museum
Golden Pumpkin	Gift to everyone (universal loved gift)	Save for birthdays
Qi Gem	Currency for Qi's walnut room	Spend at Qi's shop, don't sell

Crops — Process, Don't Sell Raw

Selling raw crops is the #1 money mistake. Processing them into Wine, Jelly, or Jam multiplies their value:

Processing Multipliers

Crop	Raw Price	Wine	Jelly	Multiplier
Strawberry	120g	360g	290g	2-3x
Starfruit	750g	2,250g	1,550g	2-3x
Ancient Fruit	550g	1,650g	1,150g	2-3x
Pumpkin	320g	960g	690g	2-3x
Blueberry	50g	150g	150g	2-3x

The Artisan Profession (Level 10 Farming) adds another 40% to all artisan goods. That turns Starfruit Wine into a 3,150g monster. Always process before selling.

What to Process First

Starfruit → Wine (highest value per bottle)
Ancient Fruit → Wine (highest volume, regrows forever)
Cranberry → Jelly (high volume, quick turnaround)
Pumpkin → Wine (great for Fall profits)
Any fruit → Jelly (if you don't have Kegs yet, use Preserves Jars)

Resources — You'll Need Thousands

Don't sell your Wood, Stone, or Fiber early. You'll need them for:

Building Requirements

Building	Wood	Stone	Price
Coop	300	100	4,000g
Barn	350	150	6,000g
Silo	—	100	100g + 10 Clay + 5 Copper Bar
Mill	150	50	2,500g + 4 Cloth
Shed	300	—	15,000g
Well	—	75	1,000g

Pro Tip: Craft Chests early to store everything. You'll thank yourself later when you need 1000 Wood for house upgrades.

Fish — Keep for Bundles

The Community Center requires specific fish for bundles. Don't sell your first catch of every species:

Fish to Keep

Catfish: Needed for River Fish Bundle (Spring/Fall)
Pufferfish: Needed for Ocean Fish Bundle (Summer only, 12pm-4pm)
Walleye: Needed for Night Fish Bundle (Fall only)
Octopus: Needed for Night Fish Bundle (Summer only)
Red Snapper: Needed for Ocean Fish Bundle (Fall/Winter)
Squid: Needed for Ocean Fish Bundle (Winter only)

Rule: Keep one of every fish you catch until you've completed all Community Center bundles. Then sell duplicates freely.

Forageables — Keep for Bundles and Gifting

Some forageables are required for the Community Center or make great gifts:

Spring Onion: Needed for Exotic Foraging Bundle
Wild Horseradish: Needed for Spring Crops Bundle (as a seed)
Leek: Needed for Exotic Foraging Bundle. Also a loved gift for George.
Snow Yam: Needed for Winter Foraging Bundle
Crocus: Needed for Winter Foraging Bundle
Red Mushroom: Needed for several bundles

Items to Sell Freely

Not everything needs to be hoarded. These items are safe to sell:

Item	Why Sell
Green Algae	Worthless, sell immediately
White Algae	Low value, sell immediately
Seaweed	Low value, sell immediately
Basic Geode	Open first, sell minerals
Common fish (Carp, Chub)	Low value, sell after bundle
Trash (from fishing)	Recycle first, then sell

Hoarding these rare items early prevents dozens of wasted hours hunting for elusive bundle and quest requirements later on.

The Complete "Never Sell" Checklist

Artifacts: Donate first, sell duplicates only

Wood/Stone: Store for buildings, don't sell
Fish: Keep one of each for Community Center
Forageables: Keep Spring Onions, Leeks, Red Mushrooms
Ores: Smelt into Bars before selling (2x value)
