How to Make Money with Fish Ponds — Stardew Valley 1.6
Fish Pond money guide — which fish to stock, how Aged Roe doubles your gold, and the fastest way to build a passive income stream in Stardew Valley 1.6.
Fish Ponds are one of the best passive income sources in Stardew Valley. Stock a pond, wait for the fish to breed, collect roe (eggs) and sell it for serious gold. When you upgrade to Preserving Jars, that roe becomes Aged Roe — doubling or tripling its value.
Quick summary
- Build a Fish Pond on the beach (costs 200g + 5 Steel + 5 Seaweed).
- Most profitable: Sturgeon (~240g/day from roe) and Lava Eel (~300g/day).
- Population requests: Fulfill them to grow the pond to 10 fish — more roe.
- Aged Roe: Drop roe into a Preserving Jar → 56 days → worth 2x or more.
Which fish to stock?
Not every fish is worth pond space. Here's the profit ranking:
| Fish | Roe Price | Aged Roe (2x) | Max Population | Profit/Day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sturgeon | 100g | 200g | 10 | ~240g |
| Lava Eel | 150g | 300g | 10 | ~300g |
| Rainbow Trout | 75g | 150g | 10 | ~150g |
| Void Salmon | 100g | 200g | 10 | ~200g |
| Rock Lobster | 120g | 240g | 10 | ~240g |
Sturgeon is the safest bet for beginners — easy to catch at the Mountain Lake in Winter, roe sells well, and you need it for several Community Center bundles. Lava Eel has higher profit but requires the Volcano — harder early on.
How to build Fish Ponds
- Go to Cindersap Beach.
- Select Fish Pond from Robin's building menu.
- Prepare: 200g, 5 Iron Bar, 5 Seaweed.
- Place the first pond — each additional pond costs more materials.
You can build multiple ponds. Each holds up to 10 fish of one species. More ponds = more roe = more gold. This is a true "money printer" once set up.
Population requests — Don't ignore them
Fish in ponds sometimes trigger population requests — a yellow exclamation mark appears. Giving the requested item increases the fish count by 1. At max 10, roe output peaks.
Example: Sturgeon requests a Diamond. Lava Eel wants a Fire Quartz. Stock up on a few Diamonds and Fire Quartz before filling ponds.
Aged Roe — From eggs to gold
Preserving Jars cost 50 Wood + 40 Stone + 1 Iridium Bar to craft. Drop roe in → 56 days → becomes Aged Roe. Aged Roe sells for 2x the normal price.
Quick math: one Sturgeon produces roe every 1-2 days. 10 Sturgeon × 100g roe = 1,000g each cycle. Aged: 2,000g. Multiply across 5 ponds and you're looking at 10,000g+ every two months on autopilot.
Pro tips for Fish Pond profits
- Diversify — run 3–5 species. Different fish = different income streams.
- Place Preserving Jars near the ponds. Morning harvest → straight into the jar.
- Check population requests often. Yellow exclamation means free fish upgrade.
- C pair with Crab Pots. Line Crab Pots near the beach, harvest daily — bonus income.
Fish Pond vs. Tackle-based fishing
If you already have Fiberglass Rod and Trap Bobber, you can catch decent fish. But Fish Ponds scale beyond what you can actively fish — passive beats active once the farm is large.
Front-load the setup cost, then collect roe every morning on autopilot — that's the definition of good investing.

I usually set up 3 Sturgeon ponds + 2 Lava Eel ponds mid-game. Collecting 50-80 roe each morning, loading them into Preserving Jars — two months later each cycle prints tens of thousands of gold.
